Additional Restoration Work

An extremely rare Cosmatesque Pavement floor has been discovered in the Lady Chapel of Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, in Droitwich.  The floor was uncovered during the restoration of the mosaic interior of the church having been hidden under carpets for at least sixty years. It is now undergoing careful conservation, cleaning and repair, by the Mosaic Restoration Company. This  has been made possible because of the kind support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Droitwich Preservation Trust.

Floors like these are common in Rome and other parts of Italy, normally dating from medieval times, but are extremely rare anywhere else. One notable example includes the high altar floor of Westminster Abbey. The style is of Byzantine influence, often using materials sourced from across the Roman Empire. The church is keen to learn of other examples of Cosmati style pavement floors in England.
